Since learning that my first grandchild is on the way, I’ve been spending some weekend time in the studio, producing recorded stories. It is so much fun. This week, a listener wrote to me and said, “oy,” she said. Well OK, she didn’t exactly say “oy” but I think I am aloud to use a bit of poetic licence, She said, “you were so excited about Eloquence coming to the iPhone, but, she said, I don’t really know what Eloquence is or why it’s so important. The listener makes a fair point, so I decided to write for you a little story about the evolution of talking computers, and where Eloquence fits in to the history of the world. Of course, you’ll know it’s time to turn the page when you hear the little chime, and I will describe all the pictures for you.
Last week, my good friend Paul Edwards and I discussed whether Braille should be capitalised when referring to the code, and this week, some listeners have their say. They are unanimous in their view.
We talk a lot of tech on this show, but we also talk about things on the minds of our listeners. If you’re a parent in the United States, it’s not surprising that school shootings are on your mind. I’ll read you a heart-felt email on the subject that conveys the sense of helplessness and anger the listener is feeling.
In past episodes of the show, I have talked about how accessibility and productivity are not necessarily the same thing. Something can be accessible, but convoluted and verbose. Sadly, Microsoft Edge is but one example of a Microsoft product that has got this formula wrong. Freedom Scientific is coming to the rescue with a nifty new feature in the next build of JAWS 2022. It hasn’t been released yet, but with their permission, I’ll demonstrate it this weekend, explaining how this will add value for you and how to use it.
